Dubrovnik, Croatia

Views from the old city walls

Jon first visited the city of Dubrovnik in 2006 with his brother, Mark, and because of their rave reviews I have been looking forward to a visit myself. We had, however, been forewarned that in two short years the prices and number of tourists had risen significantly since Jon and Mark were there. But it was really something I wanted to check off my list and luckily I have the best husband EVER who obliged my wishes!
Despite the crowds (mostly during the day time), I really enjoyed our time spent there. Because of Jon's previous experience we found a great sobe just a short walking distance from the old town. (Advice: avoid renting from the various people who will approach you rather aggressively at both the bus station and the bus stop near the Pile Gate. Instead walk down the main street away from the Pile Gate and wander into the small side streets in search of gates/doors with little "sobe" signs and then ring the bell.) We stayed in a room at the residence of Renata and Mejo Vukojevic located at Ivana Kukuljevica, 17. One of Mejo's sweet daughter's greeted us and showed us to our lovely room and then later Mejo treated us to a couple of welcome beers and some great stories about his time spent working international shipping routes, including some of the Great Lakes. They even had a very docile pet turtle who lived in their courtyard and would chase after us each time we came and went looking to be fed...he/she was adorable! And for the record, turtles can move quite fast when they are hungry!
Okay so it must be said that the restaurant and cuisine options in all of Dubrovnik are literally: pasta and pizza! Of course there are a few bakeries and sandwich shops but mostly pasta and pizza. So, here was our favorite pizza joint: Oliva Pizzeria, located in old town. The pizza and salad was worthy of a second visit in our opinion.

A challenge for future visitors:
Try and test your balance by attempting to step up or run up to the small stone protruding from the wall of the Franciscan Monastery. You must hold your position on the small stone without touching any part of your body against the wall...how long can you hold your position?

In my opinion, Dubrovnik is definitely worth a visit and the old town is more enjoyable at night when the cruise ship groups leave so plan to stay a night or two! A must tour: walk the city walls...you'll get to see what the "other" side of the old city looks like where the locals are living and it gives you a great perspective on the overall scale of the city and the massive fortifications still in place (despite attempts by Serbian forces to destroy it, not so long ago).
