Today Jon & I spent some time familiarzing ourselves with the neighborhood we are staying in just off Kao San Rd in Bangkok...which included eating a few helpings of some Phat Thai served hot from the street vendors. Yummy! (Yes despite my fears of unsanitary cooking conditions I gave it a try and luckily lived to tell about it.)
We also took a cab over to one of the most famous temples here in Bangkok...Wat Pho. Residing here is the infamous Reclining Buddha. He is the largest example of a reclining Buddha. Apparently this depiction of Buddha is meant to represent death...interestingly enough though the statue was grinning. The grounds of Wat Pho are huge...we spent hours walking around to the various buildings and still didn't see it all.
In the afternoon, we decided to be troopers and take in another large site...the Grand Palace. Once home to the King of Thailand the grounds are also very expansive. We had a little less than 2 hours to take it in before closing and we made the best of it by navigating to the highlights first. One of the highlights was visiting the Emerald Buddha...we entered the temple and knelt on the floor along with others in silence, except for the monks chanting and a Thai woman singing a beautiful prayer...it was an incredible moment!
