Nara, Japan 3/8/2008

To date on this trip we have encountered nothing more inspiring than the Great Buddha at Todaiji Temple in Nara, Japan. No matter what your spiritual beliefs are in this world you can't help but be completely taken aback by the enormity and beauty of the Great Buddha. The Great Hall was originally constructed around the 8th century but like most of Japan it succumbed to fire. It was rebuilt but at 2/3rds the original size...wow that is really hard to believe that it could be any more massive! (just see how tiny Jon looks!)

In general, Nara was our favorite stop so far. The landscape seems to be dedicated to the shrines and temples versus the people and it almost seems untouched by the modern world (well if you ignore the herds of tourists walking around and the vendor on every corner). Unlike Kyoto, the temples and shrines are all very connected making it easy on the walking tourist.

We returned to Tokyo in the evening and enjoyed some good wine and conversation with Lucho & Lisa....ahhh it doesn't get any better than this! :)

Love,

D&J
